I decided I wanted to be an architect at ten, looking over the blueprints for my family's house. I studied architecture, then practised it. Alongside all of that, for nearly as long, I waited tables.

I learned more about clients on a restaurant floor than I did in architecture school. You learn to tell when someone says they're fine and isn't. When a complaint is about the food, or about something else entirely.

Most of this job is that. Not drawing — working out what someone actually means before anything gets built.
