5 Home Design Trends in 2022

New trends are emerging from the aftermath of the past 2 years lockdown here in Malaysia.

‍

Not that the pandemic has ended and we are looking back at it in memory. It is still on-going, but I'm guessing that we are starting to adjust our lives at home to cope or to live around it. It has has definitely affected our work live, so the need for a proper home office is a no-brainer.

‍

But it has had trickle effect on other aspects of our lifestyle which I am able to observe from:

  • Requests and requirements by home owners in their new home
  • Design trends from other homes in Malaysia (yes, I look at them to learn too 😊)

1. Kitchen as showpiece.

  • Many homeowners has picked up cooking as a hobby, turned into a habit, which is wonderful to see.
    ‍
  • These new breed of home-chefs does not have old school (screams our moms!) mentality or requirement of how a kitchen should be: purely a workspace, 'practical', and no room for beauty.
    ‍
  • New Kitchen these days is no necessarily hidden at the back of the house. It is has a closer connection (visually)Β to the common area of the house. and may even act as a showpiece.

2. Separate lounge, especially for Kids.

  • Now that working parents are spending more time at home, those that do not have the luxury of a proper home office will need to make do by working in the common area, also to watch the little ones.
    ‍
  • A separate and clearly defined area or nook helps to keep the clutter away. It make sense to help define the boundary to the little ones, giving them freedom within a confined "boundary".

3. Bedroom now meant for resting.

  • Now that we are facing gadgets all day long (not like we weren't before the pandemic), the bedroom can now be purely a sanctuary to get away from the radiation.
    ‍
  • Some have even opted for no TVΒ even in the common area, with the popularity of giant tablets which are truly mobile.
    ‍
  • This has freed space in the bedroom for more contemplative and/ or decorate elements.

4. Platform sleeping as an extension of minimalism.

  • It started off as a personal preference, especially those who have gotten used to sleeping on the floor and mattress growing up.
    ‍
  • Now, many have opted for platform sleeping arrangements to increase sleek storage arrangements at the sides and top of these platform.
    ‍
  • Luggages, bed linens, concealed safe. You name it.

5. Flexibility in lieu of grandeur.

  • In the past. there has been considerable planning placed for guests (whether parents or friends). Rooms, extra lounge chairs, and bigger dining setting.
    ‍
  • Not only lockdowns has deterred visitors, priorities have shifted to the actual occupants of the house, now that they're spending so much more time at home.
    ‍
  • Flexible arrangements still makes the guests feel welcomed when they are there, but most of the time, homeowners get to actually enjoy the space and not having to fill up evert inch of the space.

I'd be interested to review these outlooks at the end of 2022 and see how prevalent these trends area being adopted.

‍

Like many has commented on the pandemic, perhaps the past 2 years has only accelerated these trends as we move out of our parent's home and start to define the working of a home ourselves as the next generation home owners.
