How we plan & design Kids' Rooms

It is quite an interesting challenge to be planning the requirement for children's room.

On one hand you want to have a practical and pretty environment for the little ones (parent talk for: them able to stay quietly in their room). On another hand, they are constantly growing, so what they want and need in a room constantly grows too. Not to forget the possibility of adding another sibling to the team.

Over the past 8 years, families with children makes up more than half of the homes we build. Here are a couple of the most common requirements, by order of importance;

1. Storage

No items found.
  • Arguably more important than sleeping arrangements, as sleeping arrangements are someone more flexible and prone to changes.
  • Storage does not always only cater for the Kid's, but just general requirement in that home.
  • Once storage requirements are set (as it takes up the majority of the space in the room, then everything else almost falls into place.

2. Sleeping arrangments

No items found.
  • While many parents that we work with are willing to spend on their kids' room, they also accept a certain level of flexibility.
  • One prime example is for kid's to share room first a big part of their childhood, before splitting off to another spare or guest room as they require more privacy
  • This flexibility is also a welcomed asset, especially when close family members stay over.

3. Study area

  • There's also two school of thoughts when it comes to study area in their rooms.
  • Having them: less clutter in the common area, more privacy when studying, and allowing more personal space.
  • Not having them in the room: Having more space in the room, able to observe the children when they are studying in the common areas, and ease of room cleaning.

4. Play area

No items found.
  • Almost similar to Study area in the room, in terms of pros and cons.
  • Of course having a Play Area in the room is substantially subject to the size of the rooms, or common area, wherever they are placed.

Of course there are no such thing as what is the most important or best planning. Spending on children and their livelihood is a big business in the past decade, anywhere in the world.

Being a parent myself, sometimes we plan for what the children need. A lot of times, we plan for what we feel they need.
