5 Home Design Trends to Avoid in 2023

You may have seen some home design trends on social media or on home improvement shows that look really great. But before you jump on the bandwagon, it’s important to consider if the trend is actually practical for your home.

Below are 5 home design trends that you should avoid in 2023. Some of these trends may look good, but they can unnecessarily cost more, require additional maintenance, or be outright impractical.

1. Feature Walls: When Enough Is Enough

A feature wall is a wall that is decorated differently from the others, becoming a focal point or ‘feature’’ in the room. It might be painted a different color, covered in wallpaper, or adorned with carpentry works. Feature walls are a popular trend, but they can quickly become dated.

They are often used to add drama to a room, but when used too often or in the wrong way, they can make a room look cluttered and overdone. If you are thinking of using a feature wall in your home, be sure to use it sparingly and choose a style that will stand the test of time.

2. Strip Lighting: What You Should Know

Strip lighting is a popular trend in home design, but it's important to be aware of the risks before implementing it. Strip lighting should be used to light up a specific section of the house or to display certain items.

It should not be used as a primary source of light, as it can be gaudy and overwhelming. Home owners have told us that they often don't turn on strip lighting even when guests are visiting, because it's  bright and overwhelming.

3. Curved Cabinet Edges: When Radius Is Too Large

You may have seen this design trend in high-end homes. Curved cabinet edges give a sleek, modern look to the space. At first, this design trend was popular because it eliminated the need for sharp edges. You no longer had to worry about running into a cabinet and cutting yourself.

However, many designers are now taking this trend too far. The radius of the curved edge has become so large that it is affecting the storage space within the cabinet. This makes the cabinet impractical and difficult to use.

4. Platform Storage: Do You Actually Need It?

Platform storage is an interesting home design trend that looks good, but might not be the most practical of all. As new home sizes are shrinking, additional storage spaces may be welcomed. However, it's important to remember the category of items that will be stored in these compartments.

If you are one of those people who like to keep things under the bed, you may want to reconsider this trend. As these storage compartments sit below the mattress, using them can prove to be quite a hassle at the end.

5. Abundance of Natural Lighting: When It Becomes Too Much

You need to be aware of the potential downsides of creating too many openings for natural light in your home, especially in the common/ Living area. In Malaysia, the TV is usually the 'fireplace' of the Living Room, so you must make sure that it won't be affected by any reflection from the sun and other sources of light.

Without awning or shade outside of these openings, heat and direct sunlight can become counter-productive and make your living room far more stuffy than you would like.

If you're renovating your home in the next year or so, it's best to steer clear of these trends and go for something more timeless and practical.
